Layer-2 Rollup Security & Finality Matrix
Systematic classification of Layer-2 scaling solutions based on Vitalik Buterin's Rollup Stages framework, proving system verification, and sequencer decentralization.
A rollup only inherits Ethereum mainnet security when users can force state transitions via L1 escape hatches without relying on centralized sequencers. Stage 0 rollups operate with "training wheels" where multisigs can arbitrarily override state. Stage 2 represents full trust-minimization where governance can only intervene in formally proven bugs.
Rollup Architecture & Maturity Evaluation
| Rollup | Proof System | L2 Stage | Data Availability | Escape Hatch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arbitrum One | Interactive Fraud Proofs (BOLD) | Stage 1 | Ethereum Blobs (EIP-4844) | Yes (delayed L1 bridge) |
| OP Mainnet | Fault Proof System (Cannon) | Stage 1 | Ethereum Blobs (EIP-4844) | Yes (dispute window) |
| Base (Coinbase) | OP Stack Fault Proofs | Stage 1 | Ethereum Blobs (EIP-4844) | Yes (L1 fallback) |
| zkSync Era | ZK-SNARK (Boojum) | Stage 0 | Ethereum Blobs (State diffs) | Security council override |
| Starknet | ZK-STARK (Cairo VM) | Stage 0 | Ethereum Blobs (State diffs) | Admin multisig control |
1. Security Council Quorum Dynamics
Stage 1 rollups require a Security Council of at least 8 independent members with a 75% threshold to address critical vulnerabilities. At least 50% must be external to the core team to prevent unilateral state reverts or censorship.
2. Sequencer Liveness vs Censorship
While centralized sequencers provide sub-second transaction receipts, censorship resistance depends entirely on whether a user can bypass the sequencer and queue a transaction directly into the L1 Inbox contract.
Bridging or Swapping Tokens Across Rollups?
Avoid central custodial bridges. Use non-custodial exchange routers with fixed settlement and zero deposit locking.
